We took a mini-tour of the city, starting at the art museum where we hiked through the woods and climbed on a bridge that was closed to pedestrians, then walked around their neighborhood behind the Franklin Institute, stopping at the Cherry St. Diner and St. Clement’s Church, before we trekked across Philly to the Ben Franklin Bridge. The Ben Franklin Bridge had to be the highlight of the day with it’s amazing views of the skyline and the Delaware and its incredible architecture. I tempted fate by climbing on trusses that weren’t meant to be climbed on and perching myself on girders that weren’t meant to be perched on, but the shots we got were definitely worth the risk. The police officer who guards the bridge (presumably on the lookout for billy-goat eating trolls and other such un-desirables) seemed to have little regard for us or our safety so I guess it couldn’t have been too dangerous or illegal. Natalie and John were awesome subjects, great at forgetting about the camera and just being themselves. We had an awesome shoot and I can’t wait for their wedding.

The first shoot was with Jen and Jeff. Jen and Jeff met at the Avalon String Band mummer’s hall in South Philadelphia, so we started our session there and then moved to the Ben Franklin Bridge where we got some great shots beneath the bridge and next to the water.

An engagement session is of course, useful for save-the-dates, placecards, a guest book at your wedding, etc. but sometimes they serve another purpose as well. For my couples who want great photography on their wedding day, but are nervous because they aren’t 100% comfortable with having their picture taken, I often recommend the engagement session as a way of getting to know how I work and becoming familiar with the process. My goal is simply to capture you being yourself with your fiance. I am always able to help take any stress out of the picture taking and with just a little bit of trust from the couple we can end up with great pictures for you to hold on to forever.

Jen and Jeff were both super comfortable on-camera and they were able to engage (no pun intended) with each other with very little coaxing from me. Their relaxed demeanor helped make the shots both natural and fun. Thanks Jen and Jeff-Enjoy the pictures!

When Meghan and I chatted a few days before her wedding, we took a look at the weather forecast and noted that there was a chance of rain. Sure enough, it rained on Sunday….for about 12 hours. But Meghan and Chowdhury embraced the rain and because they were so easygoing, we were able to capture some awesome images.

Most couples think that a rainy day spells disaster for wedding photos, but if you have a photographer who is passionate about your wedding and willing to challenge themselves,  rain can add something really unique to the shots.  How often do you get a chance to see beautiful rainy day wedding photos? With a little help from an adventurous bride and groom, the weather can challenge us with the opportunity to create some truly one-of-a-kind images. Meghan and Chowdhury had those qualities in spades and the images are a testament to their good nature.

Chowdhury is originally from Bangladesh where they had a wedding ceremony earlier this year but they also wanted to celebrate their marriage in America. They did so with a gorgeous ceremony in Cairnwood’s main room with guests looking on from the floor and the balcony above. Afterwards, the guests relaxed and celebrated with the couple on the dance floor as the folks from Cutting Edge Entertainment manned the music. Meghan told me how much she loved my detail shots so I made sure I captured close-ups of everything at the wedding: the decorations, the rings, the invitations, and Megan’s beautiful wedding dress. All-in-all their rainy day wedding at Cairnwood Mansion was super-unique and a perfect way to celebrate their marriage. Enjoy the pictures and congratulations Meghan and Chowdhury!!

That’s why I was so excited to work with Ellen and Paul, who were looking to apply my modern photography style to their classic wedding. We started the day in Yardley where Ellen’s family is from, with a beautiful ceremony at St. Ignatius of Antioch. From there we shot portraits at the Yardley Country Club – a scenic, rolling backdrop for the couple to spend a few minutes together while I captured the moment. Then we headed to The Merion, an elegant wedding venue located just outside Philadelphia in Cinnaminson, NJ. The Palace Ballroom at The Merion was a perfect fit for Ellen and Paul as it had a traditional look and just as importantly was large enough to accomodate the enormous number of guests that came to celebrate with them. Ellen and Paul along with many members of their families, both attended the University of Notre Dame, so naturally there were some “subtle” references to their alma mater during the reception, including signs, banners, the fight song, and even a rousing speech from the film “Rudy” delivered chair-top by Ellen’s brother. Congratulations Ellen and Paul and enjoy the pictures!

I often get to shoot weddings in New Jersey, Delaware, and New York and the fact that these locations are so close by gives me the opportunity to regularly shoot every kind of wedding: from the elegant, urban weddings at the city’s trendiest venues to the rural, rustic weddings at quaint locations in the country side. This past weekend I had the pleasure of shooting the latter, a beautiful rustic wedding at The Inn at Millrace Pond in Hope, NJ. Kirstin and Steve were awesome and the details they pulled together: the mason jars filled with wildflowers lining the aisle, the bridesmaids’ red dresses and brown leather boots, the lemonade and iced tea refreshments, all perfectly complemented the old stone and woodsy feeling at the Inn. One of my favorite parts of Kirstin and Steve’s wedding was the First Look. The First Look takes place at weddings in which the bride and groom want to shoot their portraits before the ceremony. Instead of seeing the bride for the first time as she walks down the aisle, we stage an intimate reveal beforehand. We find a private location where the groom waits with his back turned as the bride walks up behind him. I love the look of anticipation on both their faces and the way that that anticipation turns to elation as he turns and they see each other for the first time as bride and groom. The first look is a truly candid moment and embodies so much of what I love about wedding photography. In that moment it’s just the bride and the groom and everything else-the planning, the stress-everything melts away. Kirstin and Steve’s day was simply beautiful from the first look to the last moment as the sparklers faded out and they disappeared into the night together. I was so happy that they asked me to be a part of their day. Congratulations guys and enjoy the pictures!

Since I met Ashley and Kyle over a year ago, Ashley (with help from Kyle of course) has been meticulously planning every detail of their wedding. She scoured wedding websites and blogs and gradually pulled together an endless assortment of unique details that fit the rustic style of their wedding. Even though each detail was so carefully planned, Ashley and Kyle did not have any trouble letting loose on their day and after a beautiful ceremony at dusk, they dominated the dance floor, rocking out to DJ Nick Montone as he effortlessly blended the likes of Ke$ha, Peter Schilling, Michael Buble, and Nicki Minaj. Kyle and Ashley even performed a choreographed dance (or jig, if you will) to Charlie Daniel’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”. Splints and Daisies provided the incredible floral arrangements for the day. Renee of Bella Manse baked the great-looking and greater tasting cake and Ashley’s hair and makeup was beautifully done by Luxe Salon and Spa. I was so happy to be a part of their day. The wedding was chock full of excellent fall themes including a cake decorated with leaves and acorns, leaves with guests names instead of place cards, a Halloween-inspired candy bar, and an amazing menu by Emily’s Cafe and Catering featuring chicken with plum sauce, pumpkin ravioli, and mashed sweet potatoes. Petals and Paper Boutique did a great job with the autumn hues in the floral arrangements. Finally, Pat and Victor from Synergetic Sounds provided the music for the night and as always did an awesome job. Congrats Margaret and Branden-Enjoy the pictures!

Because Hemisha’s family is Indian and John’s family is Italian-American, they chose to have an Indian wedding ceremony in the morning and an American ceremony in the afternoon. Most couples spend a year planning one ceremony and Hemisha and John had to plan two. As you can imagine, a day like that takes an incredible amount of preparation. Hemisha and John were fantastic though, and with the help of their friends and family the day went seamlessly. Everything, the colors, the details, the decorations, was simply amazing. This wedding was special to me for a number of reasons. I’ve known Sean for 7 years. He is the lead singer of a fantastic band called The Revere. As I’ve mentioned before, my former band The Classic (originally Polymer) used to play with The Revere at any opportunity that we could. Sean met Amanda four and a half years ago and I still remember meeting her at one of our shows and immediately liking her. Last year, Sean, Pat, and Mike were gracious enough to play a few songs at my wedding and so I was of course thrilled when Sean and Amanda asked me to shoot theirs. Sean and Amanda had their reception at a venue called Nostalgia. Nostalgia is a farmhouse located in rural New Britain, PA. By a crazy coincidence, I lived in this house as a baby. My parents ran a group home  for teens back in the 1980s, though I don’t recall any of it as I was concentrating heavily on learning basic motor skills. After my parents moved out, the parish that owned the home it and it became what it is today, a beautiful wedding venue. Nostalgia was originally built in 1720 and was turned into a bed and breakfast/wedding venue in the 1980s. The building was a part of the underground railroad back in the pre-civil war days and both the inside and outside are steeped in history and rustic charm. Seeing it again, for the first time, and recognizing the white picket fence and front porch from my family’s photo album was a really neat experience. Sean and Amanda had a beautiful reception there. They have a ton of incredibly talented friends and family and so in addition to Sean and Amanda both performing each others parent dances, the rest of their friends, led by Sean’s twin brother Pat performed a version of Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova and Awake My Soul by Mumford and Sons. Congrats guys-it was an incredible wedding and thank you so much for letting me be a part of your day!
